Y5 VICTORIAN DAY

As part of our humanities topic, we are having a Victorian Experience Day on Monday 15th January.

Our class will experience a Victorian school: we will be taking part in 19th century-style lessons to understand what life was like for Victorian schoolchildren. On that day, we encourage all pupils to come to school dressed as Victorian children to help get themselves into character.

Below are some simple costume ideas that can be made at home:

A chimney sweep

A miner

A mill/farm worker

A housemaid

A flower seller

A young lady/gentleman

Other suggestions:

Girls:

white blouse with long dark skirt black, brown or grey

white apron made from old white pillowcase and string

a shawl or scarf round shoulders

black or white tights or knee length socks

dark ankle boots or school shoes

long hair in a bun or in 2 plaits with ribbons.

Boys:

long plain dark trousers (could raggedly cut off bottoms if they are too small) or shorts

an old white shirt cut off the collar

sleeveless jumper or dark coloured waistcoat

grey socks/school shoes

flat cap

They often wore hand-me-downs so any suitable men’s clothing would be fine too.

Costumes need not be purchased specifically for the day; they can be put together from old clothing/uniforms. If you do choose to buy a costume, there are many inexpensive options online.

We hope your child enjoys this experience. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks
